I took your seminar about 3 years ago and I will always remember it. You were so positive and so connected to all of us. I have been that kind of person until recently. It seems that I became overwhelmed and depleted and frozen in my feelings for a long time because I gave too much of myself in caring for one of my beautiful granddaughters who was born prematurely. I enjoyed doing it so much for 2 years at 3 days a week and then I did not pay attention to my inner voice which said to take care of yourself more. Then my daughter had another premature baby and there was a lot of trauma around this birth but the baby is OK now. I had to put myself in high gear to help my daughter and then I started not feeling well around my brain. I could only function cognitively and behaviorally. So I did that for awhile, then I went to a Doctor and had many tests done and I was fine. The only test I missed was adrenal glands and hormones. I am 65 now and I am very healthy and I do not take any medication . There came a point in January where I could not function very well and I was suffering so my cardiologist handed me an anti-depressant and then the next day I went to a psychiatrist. I started to take that anti-depressant and was very scared to do that based on all I know. I did it anyway because I was not feeling great anymore and I needed to function. Within a week I started to feel better but the side effects I did not like. I stayed on the med until 6 and 1/2 weeks and was feeling myself again. I asked to get off the med and the Dr. said there is a 6-9 month protocol on that and I said NO MORE. HE COMPLIED WITH ME. After 3 weeks off I started not feeling well again so I ASKED HIM TO PUT ME ON WELLBUTRUN because he gave me that choice on the first day and because it did not have as much side effects. So I am writing to you to ask you what your thoughts are related to this anti-depressant based on a very healthy person. I was overwhelmed one time before in my life and that was 35 years ago when my 3rd child was born and I had a postpartum depression and did take an anti-depressant at that time and got off of it in a short time. That experience changed my life for the better. I found gratefulness everywhere and beauty everywhere. Have the protocols for anti-depressants changed through the years? So I am hoping that I am only on this med for a short time and the rest of my life returns to beauty and joy and I am wiser about MYSELF! THIS IS THE DEEPEST PART OF LOVING ONESELF! I also exercise and eat healthy and have used positive thoughts always. I am a very loving and caring person and I want that back…..The Dr. said it could have happened from the past or present or it is in my DNA. DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT DEPRESSION IS IN THE GENES? I have narrowed the depression down to what I have told you above. I have worked many years on creating a healthy SELF so I believe it is not from the past. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Thanks for your early response.

The role and action of antidepressants are a mystery. I don’t understand why some people seem to need them and others do not, but I am basically a “do what works” kind of guy. So if the Wellbutrin works for you, stick with it!

The real mystery is when you can stop taking it! That one requires good judgement on your part, but I am sure you will have it.

As to the genes, they play a role, as do other factors. I will try to bring you the latest info and you use your own best judgement.

We are interested to see if you have any data/research on how looking good and staying “fashionable” while injured helps you feel better about yourself and in turn provides a more positive and possibly faster recovery. Thank you!

About a yr ago you sent out an article from the New Yorker by an anthropologist who compared parenting in West Los Angeles with parenting in some tribe in the Amazon jungle. Wondering if you could take the time to send that to me. I will be doing a parent presentation at a neighborhood nursery school, and would like to use the article. Thanks for your time.

I attended one of your seminars several years ago and bought the relaxation CD you narrate. Unfortunately, it does not work properly any more. How can I get another? Thanks.

Dr. Johnson, I get a lift each time I read about your experiences and your thoughts on life in general. I appreciate your generous spirit, and have improved my counseling skills because of your willingness to provide free information for practitioners’ use. It’s enjoyable to be informed by someone with a sense of humor. Thank you.

    Hi, Dr. Johnson,

I attended you Happiness workshop in Hagerstown, MD, on 10/11/12, which I really enjoyed. I thought you mentioned that you had a free pdf download on your website of the article “I Hate My Job”, but I couldn’t find it. Could you send me the link.

    Thank you very much.

    Carl

    Hello,
I have been taking your audio course while traveling 80 miles one way to my Mbsr class and it has been great. I am currently a school counselor in a public high school and would like to format a group for kids using some of these skills. Do you have any recommendations for use with 13-19 year oldS? Thank you so much! I may come to see you live! In Richmond. Mbw

Just wondered if you would send me a copy of your
book, as we discussed last evening, to L C Carter,
595 rainier Dr, SG UT 84770. I can’t even remember now the name of the book that you suggested, and
indicated that you would send. Thank you. LCCarter

I attended one of your seminars in 2011 and bought your package of books and cds. I’ve enjoyed them greatly, but unfortunately, broke the cd that came in the back of your book of handouts. My clients especially love the handout on ways to develop their strengths, and I don’t think there is a copy of that in the book. Is there anyway that I could just get a replacement for that one cd?

    Thanks, Ann Reisinger, LCSW

I attended your training @ Bradley today and enjoyed it tremendously. I liked your spirit, passion in your presentation and your sense of humor. I think all too often, we in this field, forget to use humor to help us stay as close to sane as we can. As i said to you, I am an Emergency Services Clinician at a Mental Health clinic – and I love what I do. And if I had no sense of humor, I would have no sense.
I enjoyed bantering with you and hope to get the chance to attend another one. Thanks for a great day!

I can’t get in the website of Dr. Charles Walker that you posted. Would really want to utilize the free lifequality assessment and improvement tools you described. Is the site available?

Hi, I’m interested in understanding the ramifications of taking 5htp as opposed to a SSRI for depression. I understand it converts into seretonin but wouldnt one still have the side effects of long term use of an antidepressant. One of your readers mentioned something about taking 5htp and it got me thinking. I look forward to your reply. Thanks for the great stuff you do!!

I’m shocked that I found this info so eslaiy.

  16. Kim Franklin says:

Do you do biofeedback/neurofeedback to treat OCD? Our 22 year old son was diagnosed with OCD at age 13, did CBT and eventually added a low dose of fluoxetine (20 mg, 1 once per day). He would like to get off the meds completely. Could neurofeedback help to meet this goal? Have you worked with this type of situation and had success?

    • Dr.J says:

I can but I mostly emphasize a mindfulness-based exposure treatment that Jeffrey Schwartz pioneered. You can read about it in his book, Brain Lock. I have very good success with this, and suggest you take a look at his book.
