Are you prepared? Will you change with them?

Our nation is fatter and sicker. Depression risks rise with almost every year. Autism is rapidly increasing, from a single birth in a thousand to one every sixty-four. Disability claims for emotional issues has skyrocketed. We are richer, but less happy and less healthy.

Psychotherapists and counselors reach out to help, and they do a lot of good. I am one myself, and I love my work. But mental health treatment cannot keep up. We need something entirely new.

And what about the people who aren’t helped by antidepressants? What about people who just don’t respond to traditional psychotherapy? What if you could have a way to dramatically improve their health and their happiness? Would that help?

What if you could dramatically raise your own health? Your own happiness?

What if you could help people with better habits? What if you could double . . . or even triple . . . client adherence to interventions? Adherence is like mental duct tape, it sticks you to the new habits you need to form. I’ll show you how to double and triple adherence.

Would that interest you?

If you say “yes” to that, keep reading.

WE HAVE AT LEAST 13 lifestyle lifestyle changes that will reliably give you boosts,

ranging from subtle to amazing.

But how will you know unless you take advantage of the thousands of hours of research

I have been doing over the past four years?

I want to give you the gift of greater happiness and health. I want you to be truly flourishing a year from now. All you have to do is spend time with me, learning about these lifestyle changes and systematically trying them.

(And I will also share some little-known keys to changing your habits and keeping the change! Success with lifestyle change rests on effective habit formation, and I have uncovered some shining gems to help you and your clients.)

If you are a mental health professional, what difference would it make to you to have a whole new set of tools? What if those tools might well be just what those who don’t do well with our traditional tools vitally need?

In the past few years we have seen some amazing research posted about lifestyles.

The Caerphilly study (a town in Wales) involved 2,235 men living in a small town in Wales. What makes this so powerful is that it began more than 35 years ago, with a group of insightful researchers who had, even back then, identified a handful of lifestyle behaviors they felt could impact health, both cardiovascular and brain health. What they found was that those who most closely followed this healthy lifestyle reduced their lifetime risk for

Diabetes by      70%

Heart disease   65%

Stroke               70%

Cancer              35%

Dementia          60%

The German arm of the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer) study involved 23,153 Germans aged 35 to 65 years and looked at their adherence to 4 behaviors over a 7 year period. Adherence to all four behaviors reduced risk for:

Diabetes by      93%

Heart attacks    81%

Stroke               50%

Cancer              36%

Dementia was not tracked in this study, but a recent study on eating behavior alone showed a 53% reduction in early signs of Alzheimer’s.

Numerous studies have shown that promoting physical activity in the elderly can result in more than a 60% reduction in risk. If you were “fated” to end with some of these diseases, and because you adopted the healthy lifestyles, you were in the 60% that dodge those bullets, would that grab your interest?

All Chronic diseases in the German study were reduced by 78%!

Does this start to sound like something that we should be studying?

The Cochrane Database report on exercise and depression had said the effect size for exercise was about the same as for antidepressants, that is, an effect size of .2. But a recent meta-analysis by Mirko Wegner and colleagues found an exercise effect size for depression of .56, or two and a half times more impact than antidepressant drugs. A study in Archives of Internal Medicine a few years ago showed a simple lifestyle change had as much effect on resolving anxiety as a course of medication, and without side effects of memory problems, weight gain, and loss of interest in sex.

Just as exercise shows up as surprisingly powerful, so also food has a powerful effect. Studies from Spain, England, New Zealand, Australia, and Greece all show a surprisingly powerful effect from simply eating right. Both depression and anxiety are reduced through eating changes.

And that is just two of the lifestyle changes. Some of the changes are fairly simple and easy to put into our lives. Others need particular help.

And that is another aspect of this training. Adherence. I mentioned this above. We have been experimenting with habit formation skills the past four years, and I want you to know what I have discovered. These tools go so far beyond Motivational Interviewing and Readiness to Change that traditional counselors have knows for years. Why be satisfied with old and usual answers when we need some new directions? If you are a therapist, you deserve to know these new approaches. Your clients deserve it.

Frankly, even if you aren’t in the mental health professions, you still can be blessed by tools to create and maintain good habits, tools to help you achieve your goals. I know I want to stick to good habits, and I have learned a great deal about that. I want to share it with you.

In this class you will get six live group discussions with me, a time you can put me on the hot seat and ask the hardest questions you can think of. Many of those hard question will be about adherence. I want you to know all I have learned. I won’t hold anything back.

You will get worksheets to try these lifestyle changes. Compliance keys are built into them.  How valuable will those worksheets be? If they create the change you want? Priceless!

You will download the same handouts I use with my patients to help them envision and enact these healthy-and-happy lifestyle changes. You are entitled to use them — at no additional charge — for yourself and for your students, clients, family . . . frankly, the more you share these tools, the happier I am.

A problem we therapists face is more and more resistance to psychotherapy. In a Popular Science article from August 2013, we see this graphic:

In 1998, almost 16% of people with mental illness sought psychotherapy as their treatment of choice, but by 2007, only 10% were getting psychotherapy.

Patients receiving both drugs and therapy dropped from 40% in 1998 to 32% in 2007.

So the patients getting drugs alone increased dramatically, from 41% in 1998 to 54% in 2007.

Why are people fleeing therapy? That one is easy. It is mostly due to Big Pharma having the money to push billions of dollars of advertising. As the Brown University professors tell it, psychotherapy works better but doesn’t have Big Bucks to sell itself.

What if we shift the profession’s selling points toward lifestyle coaching? There can never be a drug that installs good habits. That isn’t how good habits work. We compete very well with drugs in treating anxiety and depression. When you look at actual results, what do you see? The drugs are over-rated. Well, naturally. If people saw the truth, they’d want psychotherapy as the primary treatment, never drugs. So Big Pharma has the money to hide the truth to sell its expensive drugs!

When we expand what we do to include lifestyle coaching, new clients arrive, referred by smart doctors and friends of clients and by our own reputations. A life-changing habit in a drug? Never going to happen! You have the keys, not Big Pharma.

It happened just the other day. I met with the state director of the hospital association, Greg Bell. Mr. Bell is a former lieutenant governor who moved back into the private sector.

I didn’t know what to expect. That he would take a meeting with me was somewhat a surprise, since Lifestyle Interventions would actually reduce business to hospitals.

I started my interest in Lifestyle Interventions as an investigation. Coaching healthier lifestyles doesn’t seem to be anything like the traditional psychotherapy I have offered for the last forty years. I was curious.

How much can lifestyle changes actually help?

You already know. I found to my delight that it can help quite a bit. Depression, anxiety, even poorly controlled bipolar disorder all are responding very well.

But I also found that healthy lifestyles will dramatically reduce all the chronic diseases. So why would a hospital association be interested? Isn’t that where they make their money, keeping their beds filled with chronically ill people?

But Mr. Bell was more and more excited about what we had to say. In fact, when I stood up to leave, I put out my hand. Instead of a handshake I got a hug!

Why? Simply because the economic landscape has changed. The Affordable Care Act includes an emphasis on Accountable Care Organizations, ACOs.

The old model has been fee-for-service. The more hospital beds that are filled, the more CT scans performed, the more money the hospital earns.

That model is collapsing with the advent of ACOs. In the new model, hospitals are shifting to being compensated for effectiveness. While this is not the place to review that trend, it is a sea change. Greg Bell sees this and knows that only through promoting lifestyle changes will hospitals be able to survive. He is thrilled to find in me and my partner, David Larsen, point-of-the-spear tools and techniques.

Are you going to be ready for this change? Will your hospital association director hug you?

You want happiness. You want health. We all want those things. In this course, you are peeking behind the curtain, seeing all the interventions that a health coach or lifestyle coach would offer you. If you were paying $100 a session to learn these secrets, you’d end up paying over a thousand dollars or more. I am offering this course for far less.

What would it be worth to you to live a healthier life? Not get sick when others catch the latest virus? Have more energy, more endurance, and clearer thinking? What would it be worth to you if, by adopting these lifestyle changes, you were to prevent yourself from developing Alzheimer’s or dementia?

“Are you serious?” you ask. “Preventing dementia?”

Yes, I am serious. We now have a number of studies in the journals, showing that by adopting positive lifestyles, we can cut the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by half. Maybe more than half. Believe me, if you are in the half that doesn’t get dementia, what is that worth to you?

Yes, priceless!

The FDA evaluates drugs constantly for a “cure” to Alzheimer’s. So far, nothing really clicks. Some drugs may eventually help to slow the progress of the disease, but only lifestyle interventions are being shown to actually prevent it.

A good friend told me of his brother-in-law who just died after suffering with Alzheimer’s for over a decade. He ended up completely unable to take care of himself, not knowing anyone, not able to talk. What happened?

He used tobacco, a big Alzheimer’s danger factor.

He didn’t exercise.

He ate fast foods.

Perhaps worst of all, he retired early. His goal was to spend the rest of his life fishing and watching TV.

He quickly deteriorated to where he didn’t fish and he couldn’t follow what was going on in a TV show.

A big problem with people living the kind of life they think want is that all to often it is a lazy and self-indulgent life. Playing golf and fishing and watching TV are retirement goals for far too many.

You are hard-wired to want a purpose in life. We now know from research by people like Laura King and Michael Steger that people with a strong sense of mission and purpose outlive their peers who are low in a sense of meaning and purpose. Meaning and purpose is a big section of my new course. You deserve to know. Students, friends and family deserve to know. You’ll get a solid education in my new course, insights about purpose and meaning that can change lives.

Purpose boosts your immune system. It makes you happier and healthier.

In my class, you will look at your own sense of mission and purpose. You will create a personal vision for yourself, find your calling and live a more vibrant and energetic life.

I have lived both types of life.

Purpose and mission are better.

One feature of a purpose-driven life is that you are liked better. That is, you are simply a more pleasant person to be around. People like you because you inspire and elevate them. When we are around purpose-driven people, we begin to recall that we also have a purpose in life. We remember how much happier we are when we are pursuing that purpose.

So my lifestyle class gives you that kind of inspiration. You will work through a lesson on purpose and mission. Let me put it to you bluntly: You are on earth to learn and to serve others. A purpose-driven life means you are doing both of those. Naturally you are healthier. Naturally you are happier.

“There are no happy hermits,” say the Positive Psychology researchers. Happy people are connected. We have more friends because we are happy. And we are happy because we have more friends.

What a virtuous circle!

Consider your social connections. Imagine you were more connected. Imagine you could deepen the connection with your most intimate friends and partners.

Imagine you could broaden your connections, reach out to more people and cultivate more friendships.

Broadening and building social connection are simply skills that can be learned. They should be learned.

In this class, you will learn them.

Recent research finds that high social connection gives us around eight years of high quality life.

Would you rather die today, or eight years from today?

We grab the eight years, do we not?

Join us in this class and create new relationships and cultivate old ones.

I have heard this objection to a key lifestyle issue. Yes, but what if I could show you an evidence-based approach to exercise that gives you more benefit in far less time?

Of course that would interest you.

What if this same secret to more-in-less-time also burned fat far more effectively?

Sounds too good to be true.

Yes, most of “too good to be true” stories actually turn out to be phony. But this is based on solid science, something you can depend on.

Would that be worth it? What would it cost you to miss out?

When you join the class, you have two weeks to inspect lessons 1 and 2. Like what you see? At the end of two weeks, all the lessons open up. My guarantee is that you will like lessons 1 and 2. You’ll find new and helpful concepts, tools to measure progress, and you’ll be excited to get to the rest of the class.

You don’t like what you see? Let me know; your money is refunded. No questions asked. No reasons needed. Just ask and you will receive, as the saying goes.

But I think you will love it. You will want to see the rest of this course. Why wouldn’t you want to live a healthier and happier life?

Try out the lifestyles and track how well you are doing. I will give you the tools to measure and track your progress.

Share the information. When you teach this material to others, you will own it, own it in a deeper and broader way than just taking the class.

Be an example in your community, a beacon of light that others can see by. A source of light and inspiration that lifts and inspires others.

I want you to sign up now.

I want to see your comments in the discussion section.

I want to hear from you on the live calls.

I want to know how you use the lifestyles class to live a happier and healthier life, to look and act younger, and to use those attributes to make this world a better place.

This course will give you 20 hours of Continuing Education credits for psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists and addictions specialists. And the course puts you out in front of the rest of the profession.

I have a reputation of being able to “see over the horizon” in this work. I adopted brief therapy techniques long before they were being pushed by the insurance companies. I was one of the first to publish actual research on brief therapy outcomes. I adopted the “Feedback Informed Therapy” model in the mid-1990s, which is now a SAMSHA-designated evidenced based treatment. I started practicing Positive Psychology in 1991.

But Lifestyles is likely the most important innovation I have ever seen for our field I want you to be in on it, be an early adopter.

Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that next year’s CE requirements are in the bank? Won’t it be empowering to add some new interventions that may well help the very patients we haven’t reached with traditional approaches? And all those hours from the comfort and convenience of your own home?

Remember that big study in Wales, the 35 year prospective study showed that people following the healthiest lifestyles showed these benefits:

Diabetes reduced by     70%

Heart disease by           65%

Stroke by                       70%

Cancer by                     35%

Dementia by                 60%

Did you catch that last one?

Dementia? Reduced by 60%? Unbelievable! You have been led to believe that Alzheimer’s is this unstoppable condition. That isn’t quite true.

The Finnish FINGER study emphasized interventions in high risk older patients, patients who had already shown evidence of cognitive impairment. Usually the doctors would just follow the patient and see how the disease progressed. They are going downhill. Not much can be done! But half of the patients got active coaching into lifestyle changes. What happened?

1,260 high risk Finns aged 60 to 77

TX: 4 lifestyle interventions / 2 yrs:

Cognitive decline reversed

   (25% better)

Executive function 83% higher (than placebo)

Processing speed 150% better

Memory scores improved by 35%

What if we can in fact derail Alzheimer’s? What if we could give people many more years of high functioning because they adopted these lifestyle habits? Can you see why I think this is the best thing I have ever done? Wouldn’t you want these kinds of results? Wouldn’t it be exciting to share them with clients, friends, people everywhere?

I can imagine a time in the very near future when we can offer these lifestyle interventions through hospitals, medical clinics, and independently, to raise happiness, yes, of course. But also to reduce medical costs to large employers and make medical Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) much more effective. We want to prevent and reduce these chronic illnesses, not just treat them after then have arrived. I want you to be part of that, sharing and teaching.

I read all the comments that came in during the free video course. Several people asked about exercise options for the handicapped. I realized I had more to say about that, and I did. So, I added a new section on that to Lesson 2: Exercise. This is a class I will continually add to as questions come up or as I see new information you should have.

I read the literature obsessively and distill what is best for you. As you go through this class, from time to time you’ll get announcements in your inbox about some new material added to one of the areas.

For example, just yesterday I read about another Adherence / Compliance technique, simple, yet doubling the results in a diet-and-exercise program. I will add that section in Lesson One today. You could use this new technique for yourself. You could use it when you teach others about the Lifestyles options. And you should.

But you have to get in on the class to take advantage of my continually updating.

Yes, I did invite a small group of professionals to be “early adopters,” the beta testers. I bet that you want to know what they say.(Some sent photos, some didn’t but these are real people who have gone through the real course.)

Dr. Johnson’s Lifestyles Psychology course is an extremely informative course
that provides greater understanding about the essential dynamics of well-being.
Dr. Johnson’s research is not just academically minded but very practically
suited for  implementing in our daily lives for optimal well-being.  His
personal touches of including family stories and photos help to bring a more
meaningful connection with the material and incites an enthusiasm to
incorporate these techniques into our own lives.  Get a copy of Dr. Johnson’s
autogenic relaxation CD – it is awesome!  Thank you for a very enlightening and
enjoyable program.
-Dr. Robin Witmer-Kline, PhD, NCP, BCCP, LPC
Licensed Psychotherapist & Professor

Lynn lets us in on DSC_3004many of the life-changing tools that he puts to use in his practice. He describes in plain English how we can try them out for ourselves, and how to “pay it forward” to change the lives of others. I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience.
– Hartley Goldstone, J.D.

And what about this one:

What an amazing opportunity for therapists, counselors and all health professionals and educators.  Dr. Lynn Johnson has gathered the wealth of his research and creativity into a course that is practical, has solid research based information and materials, and is actually entertaining to experience.  This course suggests possibilities beyond the private client model and the content can be easily applied to community education or program development.  All his strategies, some of which we may have sensed, seen  or experienced, come together into an organized plan of healing for mind, body and spirit.

Kathleen McClain-Glynn, LCSW, LCADC

Dr Lynn Johnson’s LIFESTYLES OF THE HAPPY AND HEALTHY course is a gem. A delightful mix oF light humanity and solid scientific evidence, all in a form that allows the process to unfold without the usual angst and suffering usually associated with attempts to change lifyesestyles. The lessons are easy to watch and read, easy to understand, and most importantly, easy to implement.

I recommend this to anyone who is serious about wanting to change their lifestyle and do so with a minimum of suffering and a maximum of satisfaction.

– Dr Rob McNeily, Australia

For those who have studied Milton H. Erickson, Rob’s endorsement should really ring a bell. But wait, there is more ringing left in that particular bell. Stephen Lankton also previewed the course. And he says . . .

From Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, a pioneer in the functional medicine field:

new headshot head and shoulders5 Stars for Lifestyles of the Happy and Healthy!  Dr. Johnson has done a masterful job providing a comprehensive, evidence-based review on what we need to thrive.  This course teaches you how to achieve vitality and is a must for mental health professionals looking to improve their lives and the lives of their clients.

Sandra Scheinbaum, Ph.D., IFMCP, CHC, BCB, RYT

“Wonderful course covering a variety of topics, each of which has practical applications to a broad variety of patients. The presentations were clear, interesting, and insightful. Handouts came with every lecture as did the powerpoint presentation. Moreover the material is very user friendly: not only can one listen to a lecture and then immediately apply that knowledge in the clinic, but just as easily apply that knowledge for oneself. You don’t find that too often in a seminar.”
– Forrest Talley, Ph.D.

IMG_0887I found Dr. Lynn Johnson’s Lifestyle course to be very rewarding. It is packed with information. I like the way he always gives the references to any research that supports his points.

He is an engaging teacher and very approachable. Every lesson has worksheets and handouts to use in our own practice.

I definitely recommend this program.

P.S.: Some have wondered when they will have to complete this online workshop. How long will I keep this class available? After all, it is not uncommon for online courses to be available for three months and then they disappear.

That isn’t the case here.

Now the last think I want from you is procrastination. I encourage you to work at this every day. You can easily finish this in three months. But if you want to take longer, go ahead. A year or two from now, this site will still be here.

So if you want to go slowly, that will be all right.

Yes, the six live phone conferences will happen in the first three months. You will get emails reminding you to move forward. If you keep up, you’ll get to know the others who are taking the class. You’ll make virtual friends and be able to discuss the lifestyle interventions with them. You can ask and answer questions.

But if you want to take a year to finish, the course will still be here and so will I.
